A TRIP TO MY PAST

Image
Blurred are my eyes Foggy is my atmosphere My steps are grossly uncordinated  The words of my mouth; my speech How equally are they compared to those of a stutterer  My condition defiles the doctor's diagnosis O! My troubled soul! What have you become? In the midst of my condition My past came to me—the better part of it, I mean My attention, drawn to previous victories  Strength surged into my soul Like a Phoenix, I arose  As fine wine, I was retransformed  Yes, I did it before I surely can—again O! My soul! Back to your strengthener  Go back Home!  Par: Sambasy

DEAR GOD

Image
Dear God, In not too many words—not that I even have the words—I'd like to tell you something you definitely haven't forgotten, but I'll tell you anyways.  It wouldn't be bizare to ask you if you remember how I used to be before you saved me would it? But that's not what I want to tell you. I want to tell you that I'm a better person now—of course you know this already but I'll say it anyways.  The truth is that I struggle to recall the exact picture of the man I was so I just stick to the picture of the man I am now. I'm tempted to ask you to send me a copy of my old self but I'll overcome that temptation. The picture of the man I am now is enough.  I'm also struggling to cope with what you say is to come. Not in disbelief but in awe. If what I am now is the tip of the iceberg, then what's the full iceberg like?—I truly struggle to fathom. All the same, I'll remain in awe and disbelief will never see me.  There you go Lord. I hope you ...

TORMENTED BY GUILT (PT 2)

Image
I finally left the church. I wasn't my mother's daughter, after all. Unlike mama, I couldn't sit still every Sunday and pretend that life was great outside the walls.  I was too exhausted to try to atone. Besides, I had seen first hand the vanity of atonement. My mother tried for most of her life in vain. She finally understood she was forgiven.  Mama accepted the love and forgiveness she was offered. I couldn't. I had done things to myself and others with my eyes wide open. I knew but I couldn't shrug off sin easily.  I met and fell in love with a rising music star. Mama warned me he was no good but I had plugged my ears with his sweet nothings.  I got pregnant and he discarded me. He said I was just one among many. I was too afraid of the responsibility and extremely terrified of the shame, so I aborted.  They tell you the foetus is just a gathering of tissues, and that you're not killing something that isn't even formed. They say it is your body and yo...

TORMENTED BY GUILT

Image
I grew up in church. We were there at the opening and stayed till it was clear and empty.  I was an only child of a street club dancer. My mama was a pole dancer by night. She hated it, hated how she felt afterward but mama had to fend for us.  My birth certificate read unknown father. It was another thing that my mother felt deep shame about. She had a one-night stand with a total stranger. I heard it one night as she cried to God in anguish.  Mama would smile at folks in the church and volunteer for every activity. Many days she couldn't see through the guilt and exhaustion. I learned as I grew older that she was atoning.  A man in the church started to visit and bring nice gifts for us. I saw mama's eyes light up each time he came around, then grow heavy with sadness. Mama was so overridden with guilt that she couldn't accept anything good.  Then one day the preacher talked about that scripture that says, You knit me together in my mother's womb. While...

LURKING DARKNESS

Image
We're often not aware of certain negativities in us. Some of us have grown in the art of hiding them while some of us choose to ignore their existence in an attempt to not feel their effects. A few of us have chosen to call a spade a spade so we face this negativity head-on with an unrelenting passion to destroy it. However, there seems to be this ill-mannered trait in individuals that shows its ugly head in an unexpected time and place thereby bringing shame and disgrace to many—especially good men. When they confront it, it stays low, hiding, waiting patiently to manifest again. It isn't so easily killed. With this attribute, we find ourselves sometimes doing the things we do not intend to do. What's our hope in such a situation?—Light; Absolute Light. Par: Sambasy.

BLOODY LAND

Image
I asked Mother Earth if she wasn't disgusted and she replied: "I am drained, wasted and pained by the blood tainted on me. The young souls perishing for the sakes of pot-bellied jerks aroused every bit of sorrow in me." I asked Mother Earth to make them stop the killings and she said: "Tell God who owns me. I can't stop them myself and neither can I take the pain and tears any more. Ask Him to make it stop. I crave peace right now." Par: Juby

THE ULTIMATE SEARCH

Image
He seemed so far away  I couldn't find Him in the activities of the day His house; ever filled with laughter  Made me seek for an encounter  In His cathedrals I wept For His glory seemed to have left I was left with questions Oh where is He? Till I find Him That seemingly missing Elohim I'll forever chase after Him For my desire is to lay hold of Him Par: Crownusi

Omo, e don red oo What's the need of formal economic education when hardship teaches the best form of economics? Urgent 2k I need—who go help me? E really red oo, no jokes. I never knew I could be so attentive. Now, I'm very much aware of every single note in my wallet. Even 10 bucks no dea escape o. Aside waking up every morning, finding a forgotten note in a forgotten trouser is another big testimony of my day. Guy, e red oo. "Uncle your change remain 50 bucks, you go leave am abi you go come collect am later?" See me later in front of their house; Knock knock, I want collect change. How much?—50 bucks. Who forming help? E really red o. I'll be winning the MTN debtors award this month—no runner up.  The kind of humility I exhibit is so haughty. As everybody don turn "boss man" because dem fresh pass me. The state of my bank account is like poison eating down my mental health.  I never liked negotiating prices. I felt I didn't have the skill and i...

INSPIRATION

Image
INSPIRATION; OVERDOSE, ABUSE AND IMBALANCE Every human needs some form of encouragements at various points in his or her life and as such, the role of inspiration can never be overemphasized. However, just like most concepts that govern humanity, the concept of inspiration has largely been abused leading to imbalance in the lives of many.  What is inspiration? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, “inspiration is the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions.” The Collins English Dictionary defines the concept as “a feeling of enthusiasm you get from someone or something, which gives you new and creative ideas.” There are many definitions of this concept that we can’t possibly fill in here.  As stated earlier, the matter of inspiration has been abused over time and has caused many people to lead imbalance lives. Just like The Collins English Dictionary rightly puts, inspiration is drawn from people or things meaning that people are inspirational agents ...

DINING WITH THE MATES

Image
Right from birth, we’ve naturally grown into having mates. From age mates, to classmates in nursery, primary, secondary and even tertiary institutions. Churches are not exempted as we’re blessed with Sunday Schools, Catechism and baptismal mates. How cool right? It’s expected of infants to develop teeth at 6 months, say a word or two at 10 months. Crawl and walk at certain periods. And a mother becomes perplexed when her child doesn’t do all these with his mates. Then talks like “ biko register him in a school let him join his mates there” begin to appear. We also say and hear speeches like “do you know where my mates are now? Na just condition o.” Well, what can I say? You do not have a mate! You do not have destiny mates, relationship mates, career mates, child-bearing mates, success mates, marital mates, academic mates, etc. You are your own mate.  Haven’t you dined enough on the comparison table? For as long as you’re not stagnant but continually growing at a good pace,...

RIFT

Image
It all started cold. Everything seemed so unclear. Day became night and night didn't miss the opportunity of becoming day. The seemingly lone sheep turned into a dire wolf and a tiny rat became a vicious cat.  Peace kicked the bucket— how sad. Nature travailed and gave birth to war — so abnormal. "R.I.P" we now say to the word "Trust" as she's long dead. Everyman to himself.  We easily find thorns among our vegetables which is making the harvest harder. Rulership has shifted hands. Lions now eat grass —pause and imagine that, it's despicable. Anarchy is now our motto.  Who will save us?  Par: Sambasy

DOUBLE FACE

Image
Stick to one face wierdo. You keep changing like a celebrity's hairdo. Tell me, do you lack what to do? How do you cope with this duality? Don't tell me you're diversified and can multitask for this is so far from it. You confuse the concept of being versatile for that of being deceitful. Face the fact; you're in the business of deceit.  You're ill and if you'll let me, I could prescribe a solution for you. Drop your ego and listen. Stick to one pattern! Stick to one identity. There's no such thing as "Jack of all trade, master of some." That's a plot meant to keep distracted people furthermore distracted. Develop your strength. If your talent is less attractive, build it and see how you'll become a role model to many.  This is my simple advice. You were not created to be all things, but to be a peculiar star shining in your own way. So stop lying to yourself and to us!  Par: Sambasy

DEAR VIRGINITY

Image
Dear Virginity,  If you're reading this it's too late, like a sold out album you've been sold out but unfortunately not to the highest bidder. Not to anyone of importance and certainly not someone who'll treasure you. It all happened so fast, the flashy lights flickering every second, making me feel like I was blacking out every second until I didn't know when I eventually did. I finally came to, holding my head in my hands, all alone in that empty room, you weren't there anymore. You went everywhere with me, I wore you like pride. But I lost you. I could still feel his touch, it was plastered on my body. And now in my memory. Was it his touch or her touch or their touch (smiling sadly), I've lost count. I've lost count because in my foolishness, I thought doing it again voluntarily will somehow make up for the first time but I did it again and again and again until like a little fish swimming downstream not knowing it's way around, I was hooked. I...

IT TOOK HIM ALOT TO FIND ME

Image
It took Him alot to find me  The searching, the calling The heartache He had that I was lost He kept calling and bidding me come  I heard His voice calling on me I looked away from light so bright  He continued to bid me come  My sins and burdens a weight on me I crawled and lifted up my hands  Seeking for His help and strength To answer His call of freedom  When darkness seemed to cover me  At last, the light of His countenance Flooded my entire being and soul  His love purified my life  And set me free from all sins  It took Him alot to find me  His tears, His blood, the cross to bear The stripes, hunger, thirst Love made Him look for me. Par: Eddy Bassey

PERFECTION

Image
You were created with a void. It was intentional and no mistake. It isn't imperfection but a divine system; a system that allows for perfection beyond human comprehension. You were designed not to know all at once; for the truth that guide you are not of this world, they originate from a different realm and cannot be fully understood by this realm—at least not without the help of the designer.    The void in you is an opportunity to know more and to know well. If you ignore this you become imperfect. If you accept this you begin your journey towards perfection. Your designer doesn't expect you to be flawless; having flaws doesn't equal imperfection by His standards but understanding the essence of the void within is a good start towards perfection.    You weren't designed with all the pieces in your hands or else abuse would have been inevitable. You were structured to seek help so find the courage to ask for it. Find the stamina to cry; tears aren't weakness but an...

THE CAROUSEL OF LIFE

Image
As the drums of merriment come, so also the drums of sorrow. They don't knock. Oh well, sometimes the door of merriment may knock to know if we are ready but that of sorrow never knocks. It takes us most of the times by surprise. Unpredictable, unprepared, uncontrollable, unannounced. But after that, if we are the victim, we must leave; leave this hemisphere, leave this space and continue apart. But if we are not, we wail—for a while—then shake off the ashes from our clothes and shove away the dust off our feet, then look on the bright side. We are just in this Carousel of life, waiting for the best, expecting the worst and hoping to find what we really desire. But we know it will come, unless we exist no more.
